There is an email in my inbox that looks suspicious. Can I open it?
YES. It is not dangerous to just open and read an email. It can be dangerous to:
- Open an attachment to the email
- Click on a link in the email
- Act on instructions in the email (e.g. transfer funds to a requested account or provide sensitive details such as passwords, date of birth)
What should I be looking for to determine if an email is legitimate?
If the email is illegitimate, in most cases, the way that the email is worded and formatted will raise some suspicions. Additionally, you can check:
- The From address for the email
- The address of any website links in the email
How do I check the From address for an email?
Hover your cursor over or click on the sender name.
How do I check the address of any website links?
If the email made it past your spam filter and resides in your inbox, you will be able to see the link address details by hovering your cursor over the link.
What do I do if I still can't workout if the email is legitimate?
- If the email is from one of your contacts or colleagues - give them a phone call and ask them if they sent it
- If you can't call them, send an email from your contacts (don't reply)
What do I do if the email is illegitimate?
- Delete it.
- Block the sender (Right-Click Email -> Block Sender).
